/ Vermilion Calm
Vermillion Calm is an opera written by Keiko
Fuije, directed by Pia Partum, with a premiering performance at the Piekarnia,
Instytut Grotowskiego, Wrocław, fall 2020. As part of the set design, the
international artists Forslund/Wardyński created a visual projection with
explorations of the land: featuring the Great Salt Lake in Utah and the coast
of the Baltic Sea.
‘Barefoot, on a wintery beach,
my dreams awry and out of reach,
what is it I fear?
Dawning sun cleaves life from death,
vermilion glows her chilly breath;
murmuring I hear.
Shivering, the small birds fly with fear upon their wings.
Within the crash of winds and waves, the voice of mysterious beings.
Flying high, the great sea-birds may find a meaning to those words:
murmuring I hear.’
